South Korean president Toon suk-Yeol

A South Korean court has issued an arrest warrant for ousted President Yoon Suk-yeol for an alleged attempt to impose martial law on December 3. Yoon is accused of abusing his power and attempting to incite a rebellion. The warrant was issued after Yoon ignored three summonses to appear for questioning in the past two weeks. His legal team has said it will challenge the warrant in court, c
alling it “illegal and unreasonable.” South Korea has been plunged into political turmoil since the martial law declaration, with Yoon and his successor ousted by parliament. Yoon is the country’s first president to face such an arrest. Investigators have until January 6 to execute the warrant, but it is unclear whether they will be able to do so, as the president’s security team and protesters could obstruct the process. Previous attempts to arrest him have failed when police were blocked by supporters of politicians. Yun's legal team argues that declaring martial law is the president's constitutional right and that investigators do not have the authority to arrest him. Yun's impeachment case is still pending in the Constitutional Court, and differences between the government and opposition over the nomination of judges remain. The political crisis has increased anxiety not only among the government but also among the public.
